“Enmity” is a declaration of war made in the Garden of Eden.
“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His heel.” Gen 3:15
Since the beginning of this world, there has been a war between good and evil. This war is called “enmity”. “Enmity” is the innate abhorrence of evil that is within all of us. It is also the expression of hostility aimed at God’s followers by those in rebellion against Him.
God and His people are at enmity with Satan and his followers and vice versa. Enmity goes both ways. The Bible even declares that the two sides cannot see eye to eye or have perfect peace:
“… what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” 2 Corinthians 6:14
Those who choose to follow God are not taken out of this world; for now anyways they are living in a world that is ruled by God’s enemy. This enmity was displayed almost immediately in the story of Cain and Abel:
“In the case of Cain and Abel we have a type of two classes that will exist in the world till the close of time; and this type is worthy of close study. …… Cain represents those who carry out the principles and works of Satan, by worshiping God in a way of their own choosing. Like the leader whom they follow, they are willing to render partial obedience, but not entire submission to God. ….. The Cain class of worshipers includes by far the largest number; for every false religion that has been invented has been based on the Cain principle, that man can depend upon his own merits and righteousness for salvation.” ST, December 23, 1886 par. 8
Notice that the enmity between Cain and Abel is not necessarily between secular people and God-followers. Cain’s side includes many “religious” people, but not necessarily people that want to follow God’s ways. They invent their own religion.
If the enmity exists not only within secular people but even within religious people, how can we find God’s side in this war? The differences may be more subtle than we think and in fact, they are. God’s Word and the teachings (doctrine) found therein are the only way we are going to be able to locate which side is God’s in a war between good and evil.
In James 4:4 we read:
“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
This verse tells us that those who choose to allow themselves to be consumed with or devoted to the things of this world, rather than making God and the things of God their full priority, are at enmity with God. But God does not make them His enemies. They make Him their enemy by their rejection of Him. They may dress in religious forms, but their hearts are with the “world” that belongs to God’s enemy.
The fact is that those who choose to follow God have always been and always will be the minority. Although there are many religious people in the world, those who are truly seeking God on His terms are a minority. Even amongst religious folk, there is opposition/enmity towards God.
The Enmity series examines the characteristics that define the class who are at enmity with God and draws some surprising conclusions about who makes up this group.
